A CO2 Emission Tracker and sustainability app.

Plan and track your progress towards a more sustainable life. Set goals, monitor your environmental impact, and celebrate milestones along your journey. Planetio empowers you with the tools and resources you need to make a positive difference.

Problem

Solution

Due to the climate change issues affecting our planet, the need to inform and drive people towards eco-friendlier life is necessary. As previous studies have shown how gamification and design elements in health and education apps have increased motivation and awareness in users, the need for a pro-environmental app to tackle climate change would be helpful. The Planetio app prototype was used to conduct the project.

After analysing and discussing the qualitative data, the design elements, such as colours and gamification, influence users' perceptions. Moreover, participants believe that leaderboard and the chance to challenge friends in the Planetio app increase the engagement and motivation to complete sustainable activities. Finally, the need for constant updates and improve the app was found necessary to keep the longevity of the Planetio app.

A survey was conducted with 10 participants to identify the products, features, or actions they are currently utilising to address climate change, as well as their awareness of the threats facing our planet.

User Interviews

A comprehensive series of in-depth interviews was undertaken, involving 5 participants. These interviews aimed to search deeper into the subject, elucidating key elements that could potentially be incorporated into the app to enhance its appeal to users. Additionally, the interviews sought to measure the participants' perspectives on the extent to which Planetio, as an application, could serve as a driving force in their individual journeys toward sustainability. These interviews were also used to understand user preferences and the potential impact of the app on assist sustainable practices.

Creating a better experience

To kick off the design process, quick sketches helped me get ideas on paper to establish which elements were necessary for each screen. A low-fidelity prototype was then created for initial user testing.

Rough sketches were done to get the initial thoughts on paper and brainstorm new ideas for specific UI elements. After that, the elements were moved to an iPad.
